Playground Construction to Begin in October
The Pilot Club is pushing hard to raise the final $40,000 needed for the project, Wallendal said.
About $510,000 has already been raised in a combination of contributions, pledges and in-kind donations, Wallendal said.
The city donated land near the Council on Aging, at the corner of Government Street and River Road, and is also building restrooms with an estimated value of between $40,000 and $50,000.
The city has also committed to maintaining the playground, Durbin said.
Handicapped accessible and innovative equipment increased the cost of the playground. A "crawl through" tunnel, swings, climbers and other equipment will be accessible to children with developmental disabilities and restricted mobility.
Plans include a shallow concrete basin with arches that release water or mist to cool children off as they pass underneath.
A set of electronic panels will allow children's body movements to trigger musical notes.
The Pilot Club is recognizing donors by engraving the names of individuals and organizations on handprints that will decorate the perimeter fencing.
